Intake Specialist
Position Description:
As the first person taxpayers encounter, the Intake Specialist welcomes the client to the Tax Center, screens the client for eligibility and preparedness, collects the client's documents, and assembles the information necessary for the Tax Preparer to complete the tax return in an efficient manner. The Intake Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring that the client has a quality experience.
Responsibilities:
• Welcome clients
• Provide clients with an overview of our services, focusing    on eligibility criteria
• Conduct a brief question-and-answer session to ensure that client is eligible for CTC services and has all of the documents necessary to complete their tax return
• Assist clients in completing Intake Form
• Refer non-eligible visitors to other tax preparation sites and IRS toll-free numbers
• Review identification and tax documents for authenticity
• Prepare document folders for Tax Preparer
• Maintain a clutter-free and organized reception desk and waiting area
• Provide updates to Tax Center Coordinator and Tax Preparers on status of waiting clients
• Maintain the order in which clients should be served by Tax Preparers
Time Required:
Prior to their service, Intake Specialists must complete three hours of training. During their service, volunteers must commit to at least one 3-hour shift per week for 12 weeks, or a total of 36 hours over the 12-week tax season.
Qualifications / Requirements:
• Dedicated to providing a quality service to low-income clients.
• Team-oriented and able to communicate with people from all walks of life
• Must be highly organized and able to prioritize tasks effectively
• Adaptable to a fast-paced work environment
• Spanish or ASL proficiency is especially valuable, but not required
Tax Preparer
Position Description:
Tax Preparer volunteers prepare tax returns for low-income clients using TaxWise software. Volunteers prepare tax returns based on information given by the client, but must ask probing questions of clients to get the complete, accurate information necessary to prepare returns correctly.
Responsibilities:
• Provide friendly customer service to all Tax Center clients
• Carefully review the client's documents and the intake information
• Ask probing questions to gather all information necessary to prepare tax return correctly
• Based on information gathered from the intake form, the intake envelope, and discussion with the client, use IRS publications and other resource guides to make a determination of filing status, qualifying dependents, and eligibility for tax credits
• Prepare the tax return by entering the data into TaxWise
• Follow Tax Center procedures to complete the return and explain the return to the client
Time Required:
Prior to their service, volunteers must complete 14 hours of training and commit the time necessary to complete their certification test (usually about two hours). During the tax season, volunteers must commit to at least one 3-hour shift per week for 12 weeks, or volunteer a total of 36 hours over the 12-week tax season.
Qualifications / Requirements:
• Comfortable using Windows-based software
• Successfully complete 14 hours of training and the certification test
• Sign and comply with all terms of the IRS Volunteer Agreement
• Willingness to provide a high level of customer service
• Dedicated to providing a quality service regardless of a person's income
• Comfortable working with people from all walks of life
• Adaptable to a fast-paced work environment
• Spanish or ASL proficiency is extremely helpful but not required
